  • Foh-go-de what?

fogoSo I recently took my mom and dad out to dinner for my father's birthday. It was suggested by my mother that we go to Ruth's Chris steak house but I had in mind another place I had been before that I felt my Dad would enjoy just as well. To eat at Fogo de Chao is not the cheapest meal in Baltimore, but it is certainly a unique experience that will have you talking (and digesting) for hours.

When we were seated the staff surrounded us with service. The Portuguese call this "espeto corrido", which translates to "continuous service". We always had a waiter (one of a team) nearby. coasters When you're ready to begin receiving some of the 15 different types/cuts of meat you simply turn over a circular card that is presented to you. Red means no thanks, Green means bring on the meat!

The meats are cooked in a traditional Brazilian gaucho style that makes them melt in your mouth.

The salad bar was well stocked, even with unusual items such as hearts of palm.

The most memorable thing about the experience to me, aside from the mammoth slice of turtle cheese cake, was the excellent service. I don't recall having to ask for anything. My mother accidentally dropped her napkin and another was provided to her immediately after she rose up from retrieving the previous napkin.

Eating at Fogo de Chao is an experience that one may not often partake in (It's about $47 a plate for salad bar and all you can eat steak) but it is certainly one that you will remember and talk to your friends about for some time. I highly recommend you make a visit to this place if you're in the area.

  • Upgrading to Mobile 6.1 killed my Phone as Modem service...

herald_htc_mogul_2 ...killed it for a couple of days at least. Until I came across a comment in a blog about a related issue regarding how Sprint denies MMS on Win mobile and blackberry phones. Although I had also read that Sprint will "soon" be releasing an update for this capability on WM6, the mere fact that it's not already offered shows the inability of Sprint to know what customers want. It also shows that they don't care what customers want; only what's good for their bottom line. MMS is media texting, such as sending a text message with a picture or video attached. This can be done on other networks' win-mobile phones but not Sprint. Nooooo... anyway, enough about that... I recently upgraded to Windows Mobile 6.1 with a Sprint ROM downloaded from HTC. In this ROM, Sprint has added an extension to the Internet Sharing application that disables the service (as far as I know for everyone). Luckily however I came across a reference on the net that details how to re-enable this capability. I was severely contemplating a job change since my work blocks pretty much everything here... my only hope throughout the day to do anything on the net is to use my phone as modem on the laptop. Needless to say, I made the registry hack and now my I am back online from my cube, once again able to write a blog post, facebook, and get my hotmail. Sprint is on my poop list right now.

Oh yes, I almost forgot the trick... I downloaded a free program called CeRegEditor, opened up HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Comm\internetSharing and deleted the parameter named "Extension". Did a soft reboot and now I'm online again.

  • Tron 2 Is Coming Soon

Hell yeah! I loved the first Tron; to hear they're making a second one is pimp. About time! A movie only a computer geek can appreciate.

  • Windows Mobile 6.1 - Grade C-

It seems like Microsoft is only partially getting the hint these days. Perhaps they've lost their fight to be the best in every market; innovators in every respect. Maybe I'm just overly jaded by their mistakes. Vista, Mobile 6, and TagSpace to name a few. Now 6.1 was shown to be a BIG improvement in interface design with the main slider today menu. Unfortunately, after spending time wiping out my phone to upgrade to these latest interfaces, I found out that someone at Microsoft thought it was a good idea to release the new slider menu on non-professional (non-touch screen) versions of mobile only. Asinine. Touch screens will become the norm for high-end phones (as they all try to catch up with iPhone) and it seems win mobile is stuck in the past with a GUI designed for a stylus and d-pad. I had to buy additional software (Spb Menu 2.0; highly recommend) just to get a touch interface that was designed for fingers, not a stylus. I still have to struggle with x-buttons, and menus. When will Microsoft design a mobile interface with some taste? smile_sad

  • I'm now on facebook

Oh yes, I've done like the rest and have moved on from mySpace to Facebook. Quite frankly after using Facebook, I'm wondering why I hadn't done so sooner. It is quite frankly a more robust site, with "pluggable applications" it's allows one to customize their web site without adding a bunch of gaudy sparkly pictures or butterfly cursors; a typical problem with most of pages of the design-inept users of myspace. I've found more people in the last 5 days from my old graduating class of '94 than I ever did in the 2+ years on myspace. Hopefully Tom will get on Facebook so I can tell him what a p.o.s. mySpace is once again.

Oh yeah, my profile is at http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1365697404

That's really the only neg I have to say about facebook; I can't use REST based queries for a page like I can in myspace. Can't have it all I guess. smile_sarcastic

  • Open Source .NET Mail Server

So I've decided to start another open source project. This time, it's a release of code that I've been brewing on the back burner so to speak for quite some time. I've recently have completed a total re-write of a .net smtp server and will be uploading it soon to the online opensource community codeplex.com. Located at http://codeplex.com/dotmailsuite/ the suite of servers (SMTP, POP3, IMAP, IM) will be a complete package utilizing the latest in extensibility design, protocol standards, and security. I suggest one check it out if they're in the market for a robust communications server solution that costs $Free.99.
